It was a meeting spot for the artistic and intellectual community in Budapest. The main topic of dicscussion was politics and cultural business.
After World War II the grandeur of New York Cafe had completely vanished. And it was no longer a coffeehouse. Now it housed a sportsshop. So instead of people drinking a coffee over a good discussion people now showed up to buy their sport outfits. In 1954 the doors of cafe reopened, now under the little creative name Hungaria.
It took until 2006 for New York Cafe to open its doors again. And finally the coffeehouse got its splendor back. So much even that it has been ranked as the ‘Most Beautiful Coffee House in the World’.
